The Iberia African American Historical Society was founded by Dr. Phoebe Hayes in 2017 to research the long and rich history of African Americans in Iberia Parish; to educate the public on that history through community talks and publications (e.g., books and articles); to commemorate that history through the installation of historical markers; and to preserve local historic places that mark the history of African Americans in Iberia Parish.

100 Black Men


The concept of The 100 began in 1963 when a group of concerned African American men began meeting in New York City to improve community conditions.  Since its inception, the vision of The 100 has been shared by more than 10,000 members and  reached 125,000+ underserved/underrepresented minority youth each year.  Their motto, “What They See Is What They’ll Be,” expresses how their services to disadvantaged, disenfranchised and low-income families positively changes their life trajectory.

Based in Lafayette, Louisiana, Indivisible Acadiana is a local branch of a national network of Indivisible groups striving to cultivate informed and active participants in the democratic process. It exists to empower local citizens to resist policies that threaten the unity, prosperity, and security of state, our nation, other nations, and our planet itself.

Founded in 1909, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is the nation’s foremost and most widely recognized civil rights organization with more than a half-million members and supporters throughout the United States and the world.  The NAACP’s mission is to secure political, educational, social, and economic equality to eliminate race-based discrimination and ensure the health and well-being of all persons.  Their vision is ensuring a society where all individuals have equal rights without race discrimination.

Voice of the Experienced


VOTE is a grassroots organization founded and run by formerly incarcerated people (FIP), their families and allies.  They dedicate themselves to restoring full human and civil rights to those most impacted by the criminal (in)justice system. Together, they have the necessary experience, expertise and power to improve Louisiana public safety (and beyond) without relying on mass incarceration.

Poor People’s Campaign


Guided by Dr. Martin Luther King’s original campaign of fifty years ago, the new Poor People’s Campaign strives to overcome systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation and the perpetual war economy, and build a moral revival intended to save the heart and soul of our democracy.  The PPC believes people should not live in or die from poverty in the richest nation ever to exist, so they fight the distorted, bigoted moral narrative faced by all minorities.

Veazy/McComb Neighborhood Coterie


Comprised of property owners, residents, and business owners, the Veazey/McComb Neighborhood Coterie is a neighborhood planning group that represents a predominantly African-American community in one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city of Lafayette, Louisiana.  Founded in the summer of 2008, their organization exists to preserve their rich French Creole culture and the lively character of the neighborhood, as well as to share this rare and unique culture with not only Louisiana but with the United States of America.

Acadiana Supporters of Drag Queen Story Time


In the wake of political and public opposition, Acadiana Supporters of Drag Queen Story Time was formed by citizen activists to provide for exactly what it sounds like – stories read to children by drag queens. DQST strives to improve literacy in a playful and safe space, where children who are different learn it is okay to be different, and where children who are not different learn it’s okay for other children to be different.

The Lady Dems of Acadiana are a local group of women that focus on community engagement, progressive causes, and outreach in the Acadiana Community.  Their group consists of like-minded ladies, who empower each other emotionally & socially. Don’t let the name fool you!  The DWA is not all Democrats, not all women, and not all living in Acadiana!  Everyone is a feminist, though, which means they support equal rights. Men and women comprise this group, regardless of location or political affiliation, and strive to provide a forum for Democratic, Independent and other progressives to discuss political issues with relatively like-minded colleagues.
